Dr. Brenda Thompson serves as Director of Community Engagement in the College of Community Innovation and Education (CCIE) at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Dr. Thompson completed undergraduate and graduate studies in Virginia, receiving degrees from Virginia Union University (B.S. in Biology), Virginia Commonwealth University (M.Ed. in Biology Education), and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech (Ed.D. in Junior and Community College Education/Administration). She taught at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia for several years, served as the Director of the Center for Teaching Effectiveness at Virginia Union University, and at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, was Assistant Dean/Director/ and tenured Professor for 12 years. She was hired at UCF in 2006. Dr. Thompson's areas of research have varied over the years, beginning with her dissertation: “A Study of State-level Policies Affecting Access to Public Higher Education” in which she researched higher education policies in the areas of student admissions, student financial aid, remedial/developmental education, tuition and fees, and course/program availability. In that study, she was concerned about recent formal state level changes that could limit student access to colleges and universities. Recently, Dr. Thompson developed an interest in home school education, as well as global education. The latter area provided a great opportunity for her to present her research at the University of Barcelona in Spain where she discussed findings and experiences related to traveling abroad with college students to more than 16 different cities in Germany, Italy, England, France and Japan. Over the years, Dr. Thompson traveled abroad with approximately 50 students who indicated that their lives were changed forever (for the better) by the wonderful global experiences that they had. Regarding home school education, Dr. Thompson is amazed at the number of families that have made the tough decision to home school their children and she continues to research appropriate ways to assist them regarding this tremendous undertaking.
