Dr. Laura Pimentel is a fifth grade teacher at Millennia Gardens Elementary School and in her ninth year of teaching. Dr. Pimentel earned her master’s degree in K-8 Mathematics and Science Education from the University of Central Florida through a partnership with Lockheed Martin. She also earned her doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in K-8 Mathematics from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Pimentel’s dissertation was titled An Ethnographic Study on How Mandated Curriculum Influences Mathematics Teaching at a State-Supervised School. Some of Dr. Pimentel’s accomplishments include piloting The Fact Tactics™ Fluency Program within the school district, leading the tutoring program within her school, and conducting professional development sessions for her colleagues. She has also been the team leader for her grade level for three years. Dr. Pimentel has presented at multiple state and national educational conferences, including the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) and the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). What Dr. Pimentel finds most exciting about being a Noyce Fellow is having the opportunity to initiate this program alongside other passionate and talented mathematics educators, while learning from experienced professionals and implementing new strategies and resources with her students.
