Biography

Dr. Scott M. Waring is a Professor and Program Coordinator for the Social Science Education Program at the University of Central Florida. He earned his B.S. and M.A. in Education from the University of South Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Social Studies Education, with a minor in Instructional Technology. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in social science methodology, research, and theory. Dr. Waring serves as the Editor for Social Studies and the Young Learner, Editor for Teaching with Primary Sources Journal, Associate Editor for Trends and Issues in Social Studies, Co-Chair for the Teacher Education and Professional Development Committee of the National Council for the Social Studies, Chair of the Florida College and University Faculty Assembly, an Advisory Board Member for the Florida Council for History Education, a Fellow for the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship, and the Program Chair for the SOURCES Conference. He has served as a member of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) House of Delegates, on the Executive Board for the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA – the higher education research affiliate of NCSS), as Editor for Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education – Social Studies, as the Interdisciplinary Feature Editor for Social Studies Research and Practice, and as the Chair for the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education's (SITE) Social Studies Special Interest Group. Dr. Waring focuses his research around three main areas, which include: (a) history education, (b) teaching with primary sources, and (c) the integration of emerging technology into the teaching of social studies and history content (i.e. digital history). He has over 200 conference and workshop presentations and has written or co-written grants totaling over $4.6 million, including a Teaching with Primary Sources grant from the Library of Congress, a Fulbright-Hays grant (Czech Republic), a Fulbright Specialist award (Bulgaria), a Fulbright Scholar award (Czech Republic), and three United States Department of Education Teaching American History grants. Dr. Waring has published six books, including Integrating Primary and Secondary Sources into Teaching: The SOURCES Framework for Authentic Investigation, The Educator’s Handbook for Teaching with Primary Sources, Using Inquiry to Prepare Students for College, Career, and Civic Life (PreK-6), and Using Inquiry to Prepare Students for College, Career, and Civic Life (6-12). He has three more books in press (including Teaching with Primary Sources for Cultural Understanding, Civic Mindedness, and Democracy) and has published over fifty journal articles and book chapters focusing on the teaching and learning of history, teaching with primary sources, and the utilization of technology in teaching.

  • SSE 3312: Teaching Social Science in the Elementary School, Fall, Spring, and Summer, Selected themes, problems, and concepts; organizing for instruction; techniques; evaluation procedures.
  • SSE 4395/6938: Teaching with Primary Sources, Summer, This course focuses on the creation, teaching, and evaluation of history-specific, content-informed, and effective instructional practices that integrate primary sources.
  • SSE 4955/6958: Pedagogical Approaches for the Culture and History of the Czech Republic, Spring, This course is intended to immerse students within Czech history and culture. Participants visit historical and cultural locations in the Czech Republic and construct effective and innovative pedagogical methods and techniques for sharing Czech culture and history with K-16 students.
  • SSE 6115: Methods in Elementary School Social Science, Summer, Study of instructional programs in social sciences; objectives; materials; techniques; current research; and their application in elementary school setting.
  • SSE 6348: Foundations and Fundamentals of Teaching History, Occasionally, The purpose of this course is to provide the current status of and trends in history teaching and research in the K-12 classroom.
  • SSE 6388: Digital History in the K-12 Classroom, Occasionally, The purpose of this course is to examine the concept of digital history and how this pedagogical approach can and should be applied in the K-12 social studies classroom environment.
