Dual Public Administration, MPA and Public Affairs, PhD

Overview

Academically talented and ambitious students may chose to enroll in the dual MPA/Ph.D. program, which will allow them to earn a Master of Public Administration and a Ph.D. in public affairs concurrently. Students who successfully complete the program will have the skills and analytical techniques for careers in academia, or the public or nonprofit sectors. Upon graduation, students will receive two diplomas: one for the MPA and one for the Ph.D.

Program Highlights

• 84 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree
• Earn two degrees concurrently
• Complete a practicum and a dissertation

Curriculum

The MPA/PhD degree requires 84 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree:

• 24 credit hours for the MPA
• 39 credit hours for the Ph.D.
• 6 credit hours of electives
• 15 credit hours of dissertation

Admissions and Advising

Prospective students seeking admission into the dual degree program must provide the following for consideration:

• One official transcript, in a sealed envelope, from each college or university attended
• An official, competitive GRE score taken within the past five years
• A narrative statement of 1,000 words or fewer describing the applicant’s educational expectations, career aspirations, level of computer skills, and any special qualifications or experiences that may enhance the overall learning environment of the public affairs program
• A current resume
• A writing sample, such as an academic paper or report
• Three letters of recommendation from faculty or professionals who can assess the applicant’s ability to succeed in a doctoral program
